Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead), a Mexican celebration, is a day to celebrate, remember and prepare special foods in honor of those who have departed. On this day in Mexico, the streets near the cemeteries are filled with decorations of papel picado , flowers, candy calaveras (skeletons and skulls.)
I began making these skulls upon learning about this fascinating cultural tradition. I saw them as a way to honor my Mom, who passed in August 2007. Though the process of making each of these one-of-a-kind treasures is often daunting, I LOVE creating them.
I begin by Hand sculpting each calavera (no mold is used) After the clay hardens,
I hand paint each skull with attention to detail, and no two are ever the same.
Wear your sugar skull to honor a loved one who has passed....or to celebrate Life, Love and Laughter!
